Day 46. Sacred Valley, Peru. 3.3.25.

We are taking a 1 hour 20 min local flight from Lima to Cusco. We arrive at our hotel early afternoon and have the rest of the day to explore or rest depending on how we are feeling with the high altitude.

"You have arrived to 3400m. Please walk slowly and take it easy, allow porters to assist with luggage if required. You will descend to 2700m on the 90 minute drive to the Sacred Valley. Enjoy the spectacular local scenery and views of the Andes. (NB Average altitudes - Cusco 3400m, Sacred Valley 2700m , Aguas Calientes 2050m, Machu Picchu 2400m) The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a region in Peru's Andean highlands which, along with the nearby town of Cusco and the ancient city of Machu Picchu, formed the heart of the Inca Empire. Stretching roughly 60 kilometres from Pisac to Ollantaytambo, it’s an area of fertile farmland irrigated by the Urubamba River and Spanish colonial villages like Pisac and Ollantaytambo."

We were picked up at 6.30am to go to the airport, 70 mins earlier than planned due to supposed roadworks. Our hotel gave us a snack pack to go as we were going to miss breakfast. The traffic was crazy. The airport was crazy. We had boarding passes with no seat or gate numbers. We were allocated seats when we checked in but 30 mins before boarding we still had no idea what gate number.

The excitement doesn't end there, just as we were about to board there was an earthquake. The building shook but no one was worried, except me! Apparently it's a regular occurrence.

The flight went smoothly and arrived on time. We were met by a driver and Chimu representative who went through everything for the next few days.  We will be busy. I took a few pics in the car on the way to our hotel.

Cusco.
Cusco
Cusco was busy with traffic and like a few other places we have visited on this trip it looks rundown. When you get out to the countryside it is beautiful.

Our view from the balcony.
So I've discovered I'm not only prone to seasickness but altitude sickness as well 🤦‍♀️.
'Symptoms tend to occur within hours after arrival at high altitude and include headache, nausea, shortness of breath and inability to exercise.' This will be fun. We have a big day tomorrow so here's hoping 🤞🏼
Bar area.
Wood fire was needed as it's 13° and drizzling.

A little store at the hotel.

Today's temperature range at Urubamba, where we are staying, was 11-17°.

  1. Your accommodation so far has all been pretty shabby, couldn’t you have done any better?! Take it easy up there in the rarefied air and keep those tablets handy. Wishing you all the best.
