Day 11. Buenos Aires, Argentina. 27.1.25

Today we left Santiago and flew to the Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires. We will only be staying overnight as there were no direct flights to Ushuaia, our starting point for the Antarctic cruise. We will be coming back for a couple of days after we've been to Antarctica.

We had a short walk in the park before breakfast.

Our street. Much quieter at 6.45 am than the pm.
Art museum.
Our hotel for the past 3 nights.

We were ready and waiting for our driver at 8.30am, he was due at 8.50 and arrived 5 mins early. We had a fast drive, 125km/hr, to the airport and a very easy check in process. We still had a 3hr wait for our flight so coffee was the go. Our flight time is 2hrs 6min.

The snow is melting in the Andes mountains and flowing very fast down the Mapocho River.

"The River Mapocho (Spanish: Río Mapocho) (Mapudungun: Mapu chuco, "water that penetrates the land") is a river in Chile. It flows from its source in the Andes mountains onto the west and divides Chile's capital Santiago in two."

At the airport.

We arrived safely in Buenos Aires. An easy process to go through customs and find our driver.
Our room at Loi Suites.
A little hidden kitchenette.

Not such a great view.
We wandered down the road all of about 200m to find a classy restaurant recommended by the hotel.

A lovely park in Recoleta.

Lots of statues.

Dr Marcelo Torcuato, President of the Argentinian Republic 1922-1928

"The Equestrian Monument to Carlos María de Alvear (1789-1852), who was an Argentine military man and politician during the national era and the second Supreme Director of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata during the year 1815. He was also the father of Torcuato de Alvear , first mayor of the City of Buenos Aires and grandfather of Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear , president of the Argentine Republic between 1922 and 1928."

Took this photo with Mark in it to show how huge the Monument is.
Cultural centre.
Basilica Nuestra Sénora del Pilar, Our Lady of the Pillar. There was a service on so we quietly took a couple of pictures and moved on so as not to disturb those praying 🙏
"The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Recoleta, Buenos Aires, was built as part of the Franciscan monastery, completed in 1732 and dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar. It is the second-oldest church in Buenos Aires, and has served as a parish church following the expulsion of the Franciscans in 1821. Wikipedia"

There is a HUGE cemetery attached to the church but it was locked. Photos taken through the fence. It would have been amazing to wander through. ↕️

The outside wall of the cemetery.

The temperature got up to 28° in B.A today.
We only walked about 3.5 kms according to strava but my pedometer says by the time we walked around both airports it was more like 6.5 kms.

Reception isn't great in our room so I sat in the foyer to upload the photos. Not sure I'll get any wording done tonight as there's a little noise coming from the man next to me on the public lounge 😴 🤦‍♀️

10.30pm and I'm finally finished. Luckily I wasn't too tired.
